Position Posting: Project SEARCH Skills Trainer

Project SEARCH is an exciting work focused program for students labeled with a developmental disability. Our Project SEARCH program is embedded in HSC Winnipeg, where our students complete a classroom component while completing three internships. SCE LifeWorks – an NPO that supports people with developmental disabilities to work in the community – is the organization that coordinates Project SEARCH in Winnipeg (and is the hiring organization).

Project SEARCH HSC Winnipeg is in search of a Skills Trainer – TermAnticipated employment start date is Friday, August 22, 2024, concluding June 30, 2025 (with potential for renewal).

Skills Trainers work in a variety of work environments within HSC Winnipeg; duties include provision of work experience training & task analysis support to students. We are looking for a candidate who is:

  • Excited about the prospect of working in a hospital and all its various settings: medical, warehousing, retail, clerical, etc. Strong Skills Trainers often have their own varied work history and draw from that experience regularly.
  • A team player. We have a small team and our best work happens when we collaborate and share our strengths with one another.
  • A fast and eager learner. A great Skills Trainer identifies skills that would benefit a student, is required to pick up new learning quickly and translate that into targeted training for the student. Skills Trainers are always learning and teaching, and must be comfortable in both roles.
  • A strong communicator. Skills Trainers communicate with the team and students but also all levels of hospital staff, school contacts, Department of Families staff, and people at home.
  • Comfortable with technology. Skills Trainers use MS Office/Google Suite daily in correspondence, creation of task lists/tools for work, and in supporting students in the classroom. Skills Trainers may also be required to learn and train students to use various software programs as part of their internship.
  • Willing to ‘go with the flow’ and adapt to new plans and ideas. We like to work with plans, but life is unpredictable and a great Skills Trainer handles change with creativity and a can-do attitude.
  • Experience supporting people with intellectual disabilities &/or autism preferred. More general experience supporting anyone who faces barriers to community inclusion and successful employment would be acceptable.
  • Human services degree or equiv. combined education & experience, preferred.

SCE – Individual Support Worker

The Individual Support Worker is responsible for the provision of one-to-one support in all areas of day activities identified in the person’s individual plan.

Working together with the support team, the Individualized Support Worker will modify job duties as necessary to accommodate the supported person’s needs and abilities, provide instruction and support in daily living, personal care, and hygiene as needed, assist the supported person with making purchases, discover and respond to individual choices, provide assistance to develop and pursue individual interests and learn new skills, and assist with activities that build and maintain general health and well-being. Support is provided in inclusive settings in the community.

SCE – Employment Consultant

The Employment Consultant is responsible for all aspects of supported employment services for individuals assigned to their caseloads. Services include job development and job placement; on-site training and support; follow-up support; and bridgeback. The Employment Consultant is ultimately responsible for the timely (52 week) graduation of individuals into competitive employment. The Employment Consultant works as part of a team and interacts frequently with consumers and encourages their ongoing participation in program implementation

SCE – Job Coach

The Job Coach is responsible for the provision of on-site training and support for individuals in a supported employment worksite.

The Job Coach will systematically analyze job tasks and work environments to plan appropriate training, supervision and support.

They provide on-site training which enables clients to learn skills and job tasks, and integrate naturally into the community environment and/or business work routine.
